How Does Annual Business Travel Insurance Work?
Business travel insurance, as opposed to personal travel insurance, can be activated for an annual insurance term like any other business insurance product.
The insurer will simply need to know some key information and the cover will be active for any employee on a business trip within the declared travel jurisdictions and for the owners/directors of the company for both business and all their leisure travel within the declared travel jurisdictions declared.
What Information is Needed on an Annual Business Travel Declaration?
- The information requested will be details of the business itself, the entity name, ABN, key contact points etc.
- A policy start date and end date is required.
- Number of trips per year (estimated) and the average length of the trips in the following areas:
- Business International
- Business Domestic
- Leisure International
- Leisure Domestic
- Will any travelling employees be manually engaged in agriculture, construction, fishing, manufacturing mining or transport?
- Claims history
Which Countries Won’t be Covered?
The standard countries that TravelCard do not cover include Iraq, Niger, Afghanistan, Mali, Yemen, Chad, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Burundi, Syria and North Korea.
The insurer, The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd and TCA Insurance Services Pty Ltd as the authorised representative, will ask for an estimation of number of trips and will generally exclude countries that have been issued with an official travel warning.
It is the responsibility of the insured person/s to take careful notice of official travel warnings and assess the risk.
Extract from the TravelCard policy wording:
Observance of Official Travel Warning and Directions
|
You and any Insured Person must observe Government or other official travel warnings for safe travel in Overseas countries when deciding travel arrangements. Any decision by You and/or the Insured Person to ignore any such advice or warning and to undertake a Journey without Our approval in such Overseas countries will be deemed a voluntary assumption of risk by You and the Insured Person and subject to Section 54 (2) of the Insurance Contracts Act 1984 (Cth), no indemnity will be available to You or the Insured Person under this Policy for the events otherwise covered by this Policy. Information regarding safe travel is available at www.smartraveller.gov.au.

Is Separate Coverage Required for Personal Holidays?
Business owners and directors of a company will be covered under Business Travel Insurance, issued by TravelCard, for their own personal or leisure travel and that of their immediate family members for leisure travel i.e. spouse and children.
Employees of the company do not have the same coverage for leisure travel, however they can take out a TravelCard policy for their leisure travel under the TravelCard Business Class for Employees Travel Insurance to cater for their leisure travel and join it into the coverage provided for their business trips through the business.
How Many Cards Does a Business Receive?
TravelCard encourages businesses to include all their employees on a list for the issue of a TravelCard. Each employee’s name and mobile phone number would need to be supplied and this can be as many or few employees as you wish.
The benefit of doing so means claims can be settled instantly whilst on travel, even when overseas in certain circumstances. An employee not listed does not exclude them from making a claim, it only prevents the instant settlement of claims whilst on travel.
How TravelCard Works
If you are travelling and have a claim, this is what you can do to receive Real Time claims settlement (in most cases whilst you are travelling):
- Medical, lost luggage and theft of cash: contact TravelCard reverse charge 24/7 Help Line on +61 02 7909 2777 as soon as you can.
- Advise TravelCard of the circumstances.
- TravelCard will advise you of what you can do next and how we can assist. This may include: directing you to a medical facility, getting urgent help to you at your location and/or providing urgent cash/payment via the TravelCard
- If TravelCard are providing cash/payment via the TravelCard, they will need to send you a PIN so you can access the funds. TravelCard staff can send this to you via your mobile phone, email or provide it to you on the phone subject to confirming you are the appropriate person.
- Once the funds are allocated to the TravelCard, you can use it like any other debit card to pay for the service you have received.
